Floating Shelves

Why is it that we always want what we can't have? You know how it goes--some people have straight hair and would rather have curls. I'm that way with shelving. We have a nice, spacious-for-the-city apartment that could accommodate all sorts of good shelving, and all I can ever think about is how great it would be to have floating shelves. But our walls are old (like, they contain horsehair old) and hardly bear any weight. So I collect photos like this and file them under "someday":

That last photo's empty shelves remind me of The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. During her year of getting happy, she discovers how much it can mean to have an empty shelf in your life that represents possibility. So maybe I need to work on a) clearing out a shelf for new opportunities and b) being happy with the shelves I have for now. Is there anything that drives you crazy about your house that you can't change?

I'm the same, always wanting what I can't have. That top pic is very stylish.
